Printed Fabric Historic Period Theme: Arts and Crafts Movement
When mass production was achieved through the Industrial Revolution, many people including William Morris opposed the production of crude machinery and pursued the beauty and value of handicrafts in textile. The Movement included serious artists who sought to revive the Medieval Guild, as well as upscale fashioners who pursued the arts for arts in a somewhat exaggerated way.
In the 1870s, when the interest in aesthetics peaked, the Art and Craft Exhibition Society was founded in England in 1887 and introduced great design and modern technology. The Royal Academy then promoted the development of decorative arts, included textile design pattern which did not appreciate its value.
Morris attempted to restore the authority of his artisans, claiming the union of artisans and artists. Ironically, his handmade ornaments were too expensive for regular workers to buy and use.
